Understanding OET Score Validity
The Occupational English Test (OET) uses a grading system from A (highest) to E (lowest). Like IELTS, OET results are officially valid for 2 years from the test date. However, individual regulatory bodies may impose additional requirements regarding score recency and minimum grades.
Standard Validity
OET scores are valid for 2 years from the test date, identical to IELTS. Count from the day you sat the test, not the results release date.
OET Grading Scale
OET uses letter grades A through E. Most UK regulatory bodies require Grade B (equivalent to IELTS 7.0) in the relevant sections.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) sets specific OET grade requirements for nurses and midwives seeking UK registration. These requirements have evolved, so ensure you are following the most current guidance:

Test Score Combining (NMC Update)
In a significant policy update, the NMC now allows score combining under specific conditions:
- - You can combine two OET test sittings completed within 6 months of each other
- - You must achieve at least the minimum required grade in all 4 sections across the two sittings
- - No single section can be below the minimum grade in either sitting
- - Both tests must be the same version (e.g., both OET Nursing)
- - This applies to tests taken on or after 3 October 2023

OET Retake Rules and Policies
If you do not achieve the required grades on your first attempt, OET has straightforward retake policies:
Standard Retake Rules
- ✓You can retake OET as many times as needed. There is no limit.
- ✓You must retake all four sub-tests in a single sitting unless you are eligible for the OET Remarked service.
- ✓Each retake requires a new registration and full payment of the test fee.
- ✓There is no mandatory waiting period between attempts.
OET Remark (Re-marking) Service
If you believe your score does not reflect your performance, you can request a remark within 5 weeks of your results release.
- - Fee: Approximately AUD 120-150 per sub-test
- - Results of remark available in 15-20 business days
- - Your score can go up, down, or stay the same
- - If your grade changes, the remark fee is refunded
- - You can request a remark for one or multiple sections
How to Check Your OET Score Validity

Step 1: Find Your Test Date
Your OET Statement of Results shows your test date. This is the date from which the 2-year validity period is calculated. Log into your MyOET account to view all your test dates and results.
Step 2: Calculate the Expiry Date
Add exactly 2 years to your test date. For example, if you took OET on 15 January 2025, your scores are valid until 15 January 2027. Use a calendar or our free validity tracker to avoid calculation errors.
Step 3: Plan Your Application Timeline
Submit your NMC or GMC application well before your scores expire. The NMC application process can take 3-6 months from submission to decision. Aim to submit at least 6 months before expiry to allow for any delays or requests for additional information.
