OET Speaking Tips
Start Strong
Always introduce yourself, confirm the patient's identity, and explain your role. This shows professionalism and builds rapport.
Use Open Questions
Avoid yes/no questions. Use "How", "What", "Can you tell me" to encourage the patient to share more information.
Show Empathy
Acknowledge the patient's feelings. Phrases like "I understand this must be difficult" demonstrate compassion.
Check Understanding
Always ask "Do you have any questions?" and summarise key points to ensure the patient has understood.
Manage Time
5 minutes passes quickly. Prioritise the most important key points and don't spend too long on any single topic.
Use Appropriate Language
Adapt your language to the patient's level. Avoid excessive jargon unless explaining it clearly.

The OET Speaking test consists of two 5-minute role-play scenarios. You take the role of a healthcare professional (usually a nurse) and interact with an examiner playing a patient, relative, or carer.
OET Speaking is assessed on nine criteria: overall communication, intelligibility, fluency, appropriateness of language, resources of grammar and expression, relationship-building, understanding and incorporating the patient's perspective, information gathering, and information giving.
Yes, our scenarios mirror the structure and difficulty of actual OET Speaking role plays. They include realistic patient cases, appropriate tasks, and key points that reflect what you'll encounter in the exam.
Generate a scenario, set the timer, and practise speaking aloud. Record yourself if possible. Review your performance against the key points. Repeat with different scenarios to build confidence and fluency.
