The IELTS 2-Year Validity Rule Explained

When Does the 2-Year Period Start?
The validity period starts from the test date, not the result release date. For example:

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC UK)
For nurses and midwives registering in the UK
Score Requirements

- - Minimum Band 7.0 in Speaking

Can You Combine IELTS Scores?
One of the most common questions from healthcare professionals is whether they can combine their best scores from multiple IELTS test sittings. The answer depends on the regulatory body:

This rule makes IELTS particularly challenging for candidates who have one significantly weaker skill. It is why many nurses choose OET instead, as the profession-specific content can make the test more accessible for healthcare professionals.
What Happens When Your IELTS Score Expires?
If your IELTS certificate is older than 2 years, different scenarios apply depending on your situation:
Scenario 1: Application Already Submitted
If you have already submitted your NMC or GMC application using a valid IELTS score, and the score expires while your application is being processed, you are generally not required to submit a new score. The score only needs to be valid at the time of application submission. However, if the regulatory body requests a new score for any reason, you must comply.
Scenario 2: Application Not Yet Submitted
If your IELTS score has expired and you have not yet submitted your registration application, you must retake the IELTS test and submit a new, valid score. There are no exceptions to this rule for NMC or GMC applications.
Scenario 3: Visa Application After Registration
For your Skilled Worker visa application, UKVI requires a valid SELT score. If your original IELTS score has expired by the time you apply for your visa, you will need to retake an approved English test. Some candidates use this opportunity to take IELTS for UKVI specifically.
Scenario 4: Employer's Requirements
Individual NHS trusts and employers may have their own English language requirements. Some may accept an expired IELTS score if you have been working in an English-speaking environment since taking the test. Always check with your specific employer.
Retaking IELTS: What You Need to Know
There is no limit to how many times you can take the IELTS test. However, there are important rules and considerations for retaking:
IELTS Retake Rules
- 1.You can retake IELTS as many times as you wish. There is no waiting period between tests.
- 2.You can retake the entire test or, at some centres, take IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) to retake just one section.
- 3.Each test attempt requires a new registration and full payment of the test fee.
- 4.Your new score does not replace your old score. All scores remain valid for their respective 2-year periods.
IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR)
Launched in 2023, OSR allows you to retake one section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) within 60 days of your original test date.
Important Limitations
- - NMC does NOT accept OSR scores. You must achieve all required scores in a single sitting.
- - GMC does not currently accept OSR either.
- - Check with your specific regulatory body before relying on OSR.
- - OSR is not available at all test centres.
