IELTS for UKVI: Everything You Need to Know

IELTS for UKVI Academic

The most common version for students applying to UK universities and degree-level courses. Required for Student Route visa applications below degree level or when the university specifically requests UKVI IELTS.

• Same test content as standard IELTS Academic
• Accepted by all UK universities for admissions
• Required for below-degree-level Student Route visas
• Results sent electronically to UKVI
• Secure test day procedures with ID verification
• Test Report Form (TRF) includes UKVI number

IELTS for UKVI General Training

Used for immigration purposes such as Skilled Worker visas, family visas, and settlement applications. Not typically used for university admissions.

• Slightly different content from Academic version
• Emphasis on everyday English rather than academic
• Required for certain visa categories
• Lower score requirements than Academic for some visas
• Same security protocols as UKVI Academic
• Check your specific visa requirements before booking

Listening (30 minutes + 10 min transfer)

Four sections with 40 questions total. Each section is heard once only.

• Section 1: Everyday social conversation (e.g., booking inquiry)
• Section 2: Everyday social monologue (e.g., local facility information)
• Section 3: Educational conversation (e.g., students discussing assignment)
• Section 4: Academic monologue (e.g., university lecture)
• Question types: Multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labeling, form/note/table/flow-chart completion, sentence completion
• Tip: Practice listening to various accents — British, Australian, American, Canadian

Reading (60 minutes)

Three long passages with 40 questions. Academic texts from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.

• Passage 1: Factual/descriptive text (e.g., history, biology)
• Passage 2: Analytical/discursive text (e.g., research findings)
• Passage 3: Complex argumentative text (e.g., opinion pieces)
• Question types: Multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, matching headings, sentence completion, summary/note/table/flow-chart completion, diagram labeling, short answer
• Tip: The True/False/Not Given format is the most challenging — practice extensively

Writing (60 minutes)

Two tasks that must both be completed. Task 2 carries more weight in scoring.

• Task 1 (20 min, 150 words): Describe visual information — graph, chart, table, diagram, or process. No opinion required.
• Task 2 (40 min, 250 words): Write an essay responding to a point of view, argument, or problem. Must give and justify your opinion.
• Both tasks assessed on: Task achievement/response, Coherence and cohesion, Lexical resource, Grammatical range and accuracy
• Tip: Practice writing under timed conditions. Task 2 is worth twice as much — allocate time accordingly

Speaking (11-14 minutes)

Face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. Recorded for quality assurance.

• Part 1 (4-5 min): Introduction and general questions about yourself, family, work, studies, interests
• Part 2 (3-4 min): Individual long turn — speak for 1-2 minutes on a given topic with 1 minute preparation
• Part 3 (4-5 min): Two-way discussion — abstract questions related to Part 2 topic
• Assessed on: Fluency and coherence, Lexical resource, Grammatical range and accuracy, Pronunciation
• Tip: Don't memorize scripted answers — examiners can tell and will score you lower

Listening Tips

• Practice with BBC podcasts, TED talks, and academic lectures
• Get familiar with different English accents (British, Australian, American)
• Practice writing answers while listening — you only hear each section once
• Pay attention to word limits in instructions (e.g., "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS")
• Check spelling and grammar — incorrect spelling loses marks
• Use the 10-minute transfer time at the end to check answers
• Predict answers before listening using context clues

Reading Tips

• Master the True/False/Not Given question type — most candidates lose marks here
• Skim passages first for main ideas, then scan for specific information
• Don't spend too long on one question — move on and return later
• Pay attention to synonyms — answers rarely use the exact same words as the passage
• Practice timing — 60 minutes for 3 passages and 40 questions is tight
• Read academic journals and newspapers regularly to build speed
• Underline key information as you read

Writing Tips

• Task 2 is worth double Task 1 — allocate 40 minutes to Task 2
• Practice all common essay types: opinion, discussion, problem/solution, advantage/disadvantage
• Learn to analyze and describe graphs, charts, and processes for Task 1
• Use a range of vocabulary — avoid repeating the same words
• Use complex sentence structures alongside simple ones
• Plan your essay for 2-3 minutes before writing
• Leave 2-3 minutes at the end to check for errors
• Write at least 150 words for Task 1 and 250 words for Task 2

Speaking Tips

• Practice speaking English daily — with friends, in mirror, or record yourself
• Don't memorize answers — examiners can tell and penalize you
• Use the 1-minute preparation time in Part 2 to make notes
• Extend your answers — don't just give one-word responses
• Use discourse markers ("however," "furthermore," "on the other hand")
• It's okay to ask the examiner to repeat a question
• Speak naturally — the examiner is testing communication, not perfection
• Dress comfortably and be polite — first impressions matter
